Biodegradation of cyclohexylamine by Brevibacterium oxydans IH-35A.

A bacterial strain capable of growing on cyclohexylamine (CHAM) was isolated by using enrichment and isolation techniques. The strain isolated, strain IH-35A, was classified as a member of the genus Brevibacterium. The results of growth and enzyme studies are consistent with degradation of CHAM via cyclohexanone (CHnone), 6-hexanolactone, 6-hydroxyhexanoate, and adipate. Cell extracts obtained ...

Structural Analysis of a Novel Cyclohexylamine Oxidase from Brevibacterium oxydans IH-35A

Cyclohexylamine oxidase (CHAO) is a flavoprotein first described in Brevibacterium oxydans strain IH-35A that carries out the initial step of the degradation of the industrial chemical cyclohexylamine to cyclohexanone. We have cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli the CHAO-encoding gene (chaA) from B. oxydans, purified CHAO and determined the structures of both the holoenzyme form of the enz...

Biotransformation of patulin by Gluconobacter oxydans.

A bacterium isolated from patulin-contaminated apples was capable of degrading patulin to a less-toxic compound, ascladiol. The bacterium was identified as Gluconobacter oxydans by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, whereas ascladiol was identified by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance. Degradation of up to 96% of patulin was observed in apple...

Decolorization and biodegradation of reactive sulfonated azo dyes by a newly isolated Brevibacterium sp. strain VN-15

Azo dyes constitute the largest and most versatile class of synthetic dyes used in the textile, pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics industries and represent major components in wastewater from these industrial dying processes. Biological decolorization of azo dyes occurs efficiently under low oxygen to anaerobic conditions. However, this process results in the formation of toxic and carcinogenic...

Production of S-Methylthioacetate by Brevibacterium linens.

Volatile sulfur compounds production by eight strains of Brevibacterium linens isolated from cheeses was demonstrated: methanethiol, dimethyldisulfide, and 2,3,4-trithiapentane. Four of these strains also produced S-methylthioacetate, an important aroma component of smear-coated cheeses. It is the first demonstrated microbiological production of a thioester.
